Artist Statement:
Ani Vassileva

Two Yellow Flowers is a series of artwork I am currently developing. It represents the duality of the human mind, deeply rooted in the past yet open to the freedom of the present, existing in unique and harmonious imperfection.

As an artist, I draw inspiration from the old cultural traditions of my birthplace, Bulgaria, as well as from everyday life: people, their stories, books that I read, and observations of the seemingly

ordinary moments filled with sounds and images.

My deep love for nature is consistently reflected in my art. Nature often invites me to quietly listen and perceive her rhythm; she brings me great joy, yet also calls for our help. Among the many printmaking methods, I feel inherently drawn to woodcut. This relief process

allows me to truly communicate with the material. The scent and texture of wood bring me a sense of warmth and peace, carrying me to a quiet place where I feel content.

Monotype, a single-impression print created on a blank plate with hand-worked ink, is another technique I love. It is similar to painting and allows me to work in a more spontaneous, intuitive way, letting my imagination and feeling guide my hand. The colors and inks come alive, resulting

in images that are partly abstract and many times with elements of surprise.

I also enjoy creating more planned and detailed layered works that explore greater depth. Often, I combine multiple mediums: monotype, relief, and direct drawing on the printed surface, to

create more complex compositions.

The magic of orchestrating color, mark-making, and pressing the image onto paper gives me a sense of freedom. It is through this process that I can visually express both my ideas and my inner worlds.

Fight in the Museum:
Printmaker Ani Vassileva
Community News - Thomas Kelly

Ani Vassileva is a printmaker. Through etching, carving and incising on a plate, she is able to make multiple prints of images on paper. Printmakers make their plates in reverse so the print you see will be opposite of the plate or block.

Printmaking is the discipline that first brought artwork to the masses. Ani’s work is ancient yet modern, and showcases her mastery of design and color.
