Biography:
Ani Vassileva
I was born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was there, at a young age, that I developed my passion for the visual arts. My mother noticed my interest and nurtured it by involving me in the art projects she developed for the school where she taught.

At 13, I began formal art studies and continued for the next three years under the guidance of two well-respected teachers in the disciplines of drawing and watercolor. Later, I attended four years at the Textile Technical School in Sofia. After graduating, I continued to study drawing and worked on developing my own style— one that not only reflected the ideas and concepts I wished to explore, but also accurately expressed them to the viewer.
I worked in animation production at the Cinema Center of Sofia for two years.

In my twenties, I emigrated to the USA. I worked in a ceramic studio for a few years. I then enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, with the goal of studying painting and further exploring my understanding of color. PAFA offered three distinct majors: painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The first year was designed as an introduction to each discipline and their techniques and styles. It was during this time that I realized printmaking provided me with a vast range of specific techniques and mediums, offering great freedom to develop my own language of expression.
This allowed me to combine painterly methods with printmaking, using monotypes or woodcuts, as well as line work in etching, engraving, lithography, and relief printing. I also took sculpture classes throughout my four years at PAFA, which came very naturally to
me.

I continue to study and learn independently, always developing and strengthening both my technical skills and my ability to communicate ideas clearly to my audience. My work has been shown in many group exhibitions and a solo show in the Northeastern U.S., and is part of several private collections around the world.

I currently work as a full-time artist from my home and studio at the Johnson Atelier in the Grounds for Sculpture, both located in Hamilton, NJ.
